A soil health scoring framework for arable cropping systems in Saskatchewan, Canada

چکیده
Farmers are looking for appropriate tools assessing and interpreting the health status of their soils; however, there is no standardized prairie-based soil scoring framework. Accordingly, we focused on developing one arable cropping systems in Saskatchewan. In 2018, samples (0–15, 15–30, 30–60 cm depths) were collected from 55 fields across Saskatchewan, along with native prairie samples. Various chemical, physical, biological attributes measured (23 total). Based data distribution each attribute, developed functions. The results multivariate analyses used to determine weighting factors needed integrate individual scores attribute into a single Saskatchewan Assessment Soil Health score. carbon (C) nitrogen (N) indices (soil organic C, active total N, protein) phosphorus produced highest factors. We also tested if linkages between crop productivity by cereal yields past 10 years as reported same rural municipalities where collected. A positive relationship was most apparent during dry years; thus, recommend further research explore this linkage at finer scale. Overall, forms foundation promising framework that can be built upon, due course, lead development tool producers who interested tracking using inform management.

Cover crops support ecological intensification of arable cropping systems
A major challenge for agriculture is to enhance productivity with minimum impact on the environment. Several studies indicate that cover crops could replace anthropogenic inputs and enhance crop productivity. However, so far, it is unclear if cover crop effects vary between different cropping systems, and direct comparisons among major arable production systems are rare. Here we compared the sh...

Soil properties can vary spatially at a paddock to farm scale due to differences in topography, parent material, vegetation or land management. The objective of this study was to quantify the spatial variability of available nutrients and organic matter within a 10.4 ha paddock (predominantly Templeton silt loam; flat topography) at Lincoln that had a long-term history of arable cropping. Sampl...

Many sustainable agronomical practices can be adopted to contain environmental risks of crop production and, at the same time, sustain yield and quality. In this framework, the aim of this research was to study the effects of continuous cropping (CC) and crop rotation, tillage and fertilization strategies on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) production. The responses of soil properties we...
متن کاملSoil Biodiversity and Grass Cropping Systems
Grass cropping in the rotation and the use of no-till seeding appear to be important components for developing sustainable cropping systems. Grass cropping and no-till seeding improve soil organic matter content, increase the soil microbial biomass, increase earthworm numbers, likely cause a buildup of fungivorous microarthropods and nematodes, and greatly increases the resistance of soil to er...
